(AP) — Forty-nine prisebeauties, one of whom will be chosen “Miss America” in the national beauty pageant tonight, slept late today. All were- tired ‘and besides they wanted to look especially fresh tonight.Friday was a big -day.- what with all the sight-seeing and trips to beauty parlors, and last night was j 3 a big night.First, there was a fashion show in which each beauty paraded for the judges, and then the American Beauty ball under soft-colored lights. It lasted until way past midnight.The judges proclaimed that “Miss Westchester County,” Evelyn Raye of New Rochelle, N, Y„ had the most personality of any of the girls, and that “Miss Bertrand Island,” N. J., an attractive blonde who looks like Jean Harlow, was runner-up.Then they decided “Mis Bertrand Island,” Bette Cooper, looked better than the rest in an evening gown. It was red velvet trimmed around the edges with tea roses.Miss Te:-:as, Alice '..Emcrick' of Fort Worth, appearing iii white crepe with rhinestones; tight-fitting around the waist and.widely flared at the bottom, won second prize for appearance in evening gown.
