Kids Classic Festival to begin ThursdayBy George Gannonregister-herald reporterLegions of children teeter on the vergeof besieging Beckley. They will comefrom across the region to engage in what has become a tradition for the citv — theeighth annual Kids Classic Festival.Stretching over four days, Sept. 13-16, all festival entertainment is geared toward children of all ages.Jill Moorefleld, director of BeckleyMain Street, describes the event as “lotsof family fun.”The theme for this year’s festival is“Color Your World*According to Mooretield, the namlt;‘ was chosen because it coincides vuth the theme of the Youth Museum of SouthernWest Virginia's current exhibit and be cause it promotes cultural diversity.“We used (the theme) because of the exhibit at the Youth Museum Their ‘Coloi Your World exhibit displays different colors, as well as different culturesand different continents.'The festival kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday at Animal House Pizza in Raleigh Mall. An animated stage show, video games, karaoke and an air hockey tournament are scheduled.Friday, Ronald McDonald will make an appearance at the Beckley Plaza McDonald’s from 4 to 5 p.m. Then it’s off to the Youth Museum amphitheater, where Ronald will premiere a new show. Planetarium shows will also be offered at the museum. The Ronald McDonald show is free. Admission to the museum is $2.The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine will offer the “tunnel of color” ride from 7 to 9p.m. Friday.Saturday, the festival blasts into high gear when uptown Beckley hosts theKids Fair. Along w ith a parade, kid.-' will be treated to an arcade, puppet show, a reading area, Hula Hoop contest and a slew of other activities.The parade begins at 11 a.m. at the Park Junior High parking lot and travelsto Shoemaker Square. It features a cast of local children’s characters, including Clifford from West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the Big Dawg from WJLS.Prior to the parade, kids will have the opportunity to get their “bike license” from the bike safety clinic and decorate their bikes for the parade.The party moves to the Beckley Little League fields Saturday night for a punt, pass and kick competition and u home run derby. There is u $5 registration fee to enter each event. with half the money going to the winners' cash pot and half supporting Toys for Tots. The competition will begin about 5:30 p.m.Fireworks, starting a 9 p.m., will end the evening with a bang.The celebration will draw to u close next Sunday afternoon at Tamarack.
