12—The Cumberland News, Monday, September 8,1980At Blue BeachBoating AccidentTakes Two LivesA boating accident early yesterday morning on the South Branch of the Potomac River, just north of Romney, W.Va., claimed the lives of two area menJames R Carder, 40, of Oldtown Road, this city; and Kevin M Gurtler, 23, of RD 1, Green Spring, W. Va were killed at about 2 a m., when the motor boat in which they were ridingoverturnedTfc D B Burkhard of the West Virginia State Police at Romney, said the accident occurred about seven miles from Rommey at Blue BeachThe police officials said no one actually saw the accident happen However, the fatal mishap is being classed as accidental Reportedly, a man on shore, identified as Bill Chaney by Tfc Burkhard, tried to rescue the two men,but w as unsuccessfulDivers from the RomneyVolunteer Fire Departmentwere sent to the scene along with State Police, and at 7:10 am yesterday they recovered Carder’s body from the water Gurtler’s body was found nearly two hours later, at 9:30 a m Attempts were made 11 night to locate the bodies of the two men Springfield Ambulance was sent to the scene, and the bodies were transported to Hampshire Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival by Hampshire County Medical Examiner Nabal B GironGurtler was a son of Mrs Leona C. Dean Kcsler, Green Spring, and the late Elmer E Gurtler He was employed as a track man for the South Branch Valley RailroadSurvivors besides his mother include his widow, Mrs Tammy Sue (Parry) Gurtler; a son, Kevin M Gurtler Jr , at home, two sisters, Mrs. Donna Jean Dunford, Marion, Va. and Mrs Linda L Staub, Hixson, Tenn ; a halfbrother, William Leo Kesler, Green Spring and his maternal grandmother, Mrs Gertrude Dean, Winchester, VaFriends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home. Romney, today andtomorrow from 7 to 9 p mServices will be conductedWednesday at 11 a m at the funeral home by Rev. Kenneth Phares. Interment will be in the Forest Glen Cemetery, Green SpringBorn in Cumberland, Carder was a son of Mrs Geneieve Carder Saville, Green SpringHe was employed as a truck driver for Spector-Viking Truck Division of Pittsburgh, Pa.He was a member of the International Association ofTeamsters, Chauffers, W arehousemen and Helpers of America. Local 800. loyal Order of Moose 271 and during the Vietnam conflict, he served with the armed forces in Germany.Survivors besides his mother include his stepfather, Vernon Saville, Romney, W.
