ELLIOTT REUNION A HAPPY EVENTApproximately 700 People Attend Annual Gathering at i Elliott Church in Cleveland County1- itLiShelby, R-5, Sept. 5.—While there- | is a distinction and a difference be-e i tween news and ancient history, my 1 i correspondence partakes of the nail j ture of both and yet can be classed- 1 as neither. As for who are making l ! goo-goo eyes at each other of differ-i ! ent sexes and what man has acceptedI * •. j a position as chambermaid of a livery stable, such hog wash does not appeal to me, nor do I wish to inflict it upon the reading public.I think that notice was, served in your columns that an annual event, styled the Elliott reunion, was scheduled for August 27, 1927 at Elliott J j church, fourteen miles N. W. of : | Shelby, and the same materialized ' j with from 600 to 700 present. The ^ weather was ideal, the table was loaded with triumphs of culinary skill,— all present ate to satiety; and enough was left to feed three hundred.0Among those present, J. C. Elliott, a Confederate veteran and a newspaper writer, aged 82, was the oldest white man present. The oldest man of color present was Rev. Daniel Brooks, an eminent colored Methodist minister of High Point who made this a home-coming ! occasion. He is likewise a Confed-. erate veteran; and when mustered out * of service resolved to carry the Word of Life to his untutored race. Being ignorant himself, he is largely self-taught as were Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson. He is still mentally and physically active and serveshis district as Presiding Elder.Aunt Eliza Elliott was present, as usual, and registers 88 in the journey of life. Several others of colored contingent, mostly ex-slaves, were present and were bountifully fed by themselves, according to Southern custom. These were all colored people of the best class and realize that the high- ^ grade people of the South are their best friends.Among other visitors who mac e this their Mecca, may be mentioned William and Gladdys Elliott from Golden, g Colorado; Mrs. M. R. Lattimore, Ok- \ lahoma, W. D. Elliott, Covington, Ga.;R. C. White, Sandersville, Ga.; Mr. j Willie and Miss Lizzie Avant, Spar- 6 tanburg, S. C.; while another had his 1 \ baggage checked from a town in Al-[ abama. '► Of course Shelby, Mooresboro, El-► j lenboro, Lattimore, Gastonia and var-► ious other towns furnished their quo-\ tas.
