Former Stars of East and West High Battle for Places on College TeamsFormer stars and near stars of east and west high school football teams will fill places on many college elevens of Iowa this fall, providing they are able to “make the team.” With opening of practically every college in the state scheduled for either next week or the week following, Waterloo football me# who are planning on either entering school or returning to the campuses they left last June, are giving some thought to their chance of playing on a college team.la prevailing uponGlenn(“Doc’?) O’Connor’s only handicap in placing on the Iowa freshman team this year will be his weight, but his speed may overcome that obstacle.Rath Fights for Place.Gordon (“Tutce’*) Rath is another east high man who will zo to Iowa. He will be fighting for a place on the varsity this year, attempting to equal the records set at Towa City by his illustrious high school teammates of 1913-1916, Fred Becker and Ronald Reed, both of whom were placed on allconference teams. Rath has a Dig battle on his hands but with a fair break in the luck, he should puteast high. Waterloo, back on the map at the Hawkeye school.Des Moines college, Des Moines, will have two representatives' of west high battling for berths when Coach Bell, calls his squad together for the first time Friday. Bob Nauiuan. who played quarterback at west high before the war. and Keith Buechele's letter man at Des Moines, will attempt to uphold the traditions of west high. Xauman has not played high school football since 1915. but has taken part in many army, football games and is in fairly good condition. He will try either the quarterback job or a half back berth. Buechele, with a year’s experience, should be a ole to hold his own. despite the fact that. Des Moines college is boa«ing of many all-state high school men this year.Six Men to Ames.Gunny** Gunstead and “Russ’-Stewart, east high, enter Ames as freshmen this fall. Dale Swanson, a former east high captain, .will be a junior there and if he can arrange his schedule in a stisfactory manner will go out for the. varsity eleven. Orin Weather!!!. east high, is a probable Cyclone candidate. Bob and “Boob” Miller, wqst high, will return to Iowa state college. but have not decided whether they will play football. They were on the Cyclonc basketball squad last winter.Payson Peterson, who played football at east high, and later was a track star at west high, is almost assured of a place on the Cornell college team.
