Her schedule at HHS includes the courses of English, government, and the nursery school program of the home economics department.Although she will graduate with the Class of 1984 in May, when Merja returns to her hometown of Punkalaidun, she will still haveone more year of school to take. Her career choice is to be a physical therapist in Finland.Upon arriving to the United States in early August, Merja and other exchange students spend two days in New York City “unwinding” from the long trip, sight-seeing and relaxing, before departing for their host families.During her first few weeks in Hubbard, activities have been kept to a minimum for Merja as she acquaints herself with the surroundings and the language. Although, she has taken a trip to the VIP Entertainment Complex in Niles.Dancing is one of Merja’s hobbies, as well as photography, jogging and cross country skiing -as she and her family, father Tauna, mother Ritva, and older brother and sister, all are enthusiasts of the biathalon. The biathalon is a combination of skiing and shooting, and is a part of the winter Olympics, but for males, only. Merja and her siblings have numerous medals in the sport. Many adventures await Merja during her stay in Hubbard, and she is one of two exchange students residing in the community this year.Currently, the Rotary club is accepting applications for sophomores and juniors who are interested in being an exchange student in 1984-85.The guidance department of HHS has more information about the program, and interested students are also encouraged to talk with Merja and find out what being an exchange student involves.
