In those days the postmaster at the county seat was the government agent in the creation of new post offices in thecounty.Knoxville was the old name for the town of Dubois. It was referred to as Knoxville in two or more acts ofthe Indiana General Assembly under the constitution of 1816.When the petition was presented for a post office, the name Knoxville could not be used, — for the county seat of Starke County, Indiana bore the name Knox, and the similarity was too great to suit the post office department at Washington,It just so happened that Geo. R. Wilson, then a young boy, and a friend of Mr. Gramelspachei the postmaster, came to the delivery window while Mr. Gramelspacherwas leading the government letter refusing the name Knoxville. The postmaster turned to Wilson and said. — “Well, the government says we can not call the new poet office Knoxville. Say. Robert, what would you suggest as a good name for the new post office?After a lengthy conversation and careful consideration the postmaster and his young friend thought the name Dubois, named in honor of the county with the same name wouldGramelspacher was postmaster at Jasper from 1877 to 1884.
