Ii.Flat Boats On RiverWhen the waters were high, flatboats leaded with such products as the community produced — salted and cured pork, venison, corn, beans, nuts from the forest, hoop poles, bark for tanning leather, hides, lumber. etc. were taken down the Patoka river to the Wabash, then on the waters of the Ohio and Mississippi to Memphis or New Orleans. Drives of loose logs from the port of Knoxville were floated to market by^ means of the Patoka river.Slofr///#In 1871, the last flat boat went out the port at Knoxville. It was loaded with hoop poles and owned by John Buchart.Dubois was sureyed and plattedas a town by Co. Surveyor Geo. R. Wilson. Nov. 5 and 6th, 1885 In 1907, the Southern railroad was constructed near the town which added much to the convenience of the people. The train stop at Dubois was called Fischer's station.As a result of the railroad, hotels and livery barns sprang up in Dubois. Early hotel operators were George Schott, John Danhafer, William Edwards, Ferdie Schneider, Henry Pfaffenberger, Oscar Goodman. John Ward and Mrs. E. Clay-borne. The depot was about a half mile from town. A large hack from one of the livery barns brought the mail and the passengers to the town ever/ time the train came in. TheiIsI!§ passenger train was discontinued in1.I5#/#/*1940.Telephone wires were stretched to the town of Dubois in 1896, and in 1955 the regular telephones gave way to the dial system.In 1908-1909, rock road constructions were beginning to improve transportation in and around the town of Dubois.The elevating and black topping of the Dubois station road which runs from the new state high highway to the Southern depot will be agreat convenience to all motorists.The Farmers State Bank at Dubois was organized in 1909 with adapital stolt;$k of $25,000 00. Thebuilding was a brick and with its fixtures was valued at $4500 00, Itopened for business January 3, 1910,with J. B Schroering, President; Frank J. Seng, Vice President and James O.
