At the rtrftmduntBased on a story by Dorothy B. Hughes, the mystny writer, thistells of Screenwriter HumphreyBugart who has a reputation foi being a violent man. One night hrtakes home a hatcheck gul from a bistro, to tell him the story of a book he is supposed to write a script from ihe's the lazy type), She is found murdered in a lonely spot that night. His neighbor, Gloria Grahame, testifies to the police in his behalf, and they fall in love But so violent is he that she beginsto suspect him of murder of the girl. . . .Bogey has got him.-rlf a pretty good picture here, the best he hashad of the last several. The audience knows from the beginning that he did not kill the girl, but it is interesting to watch suspicion mount in Gloria Graharr.es mind. And in this is the films weakness. She piesumably saw him say goodnight to the girl, yet she becomes suspicious. It is a story fault that is more than made up for by the interesting characterizations and the mounting suspense in the Bogart-Grahame relationship. The ending is different, to say the least.Rating: •* *'No Man of Her Own'A Par Amount picture, procured by Richard Malbaum dire ted by Mitt nell Leisen. •creeapiftv by ba’iy Henson and Cathrme Turney. Others, besides the principals, are Henry O’Neill. Richard Denning, Phyllis Thaxtcr and Esther Dale. The ending will come as something of a surprise Suspicion points in several directions to the murderer; there are several confessions guilt—and one murderer.Rating: * *certainly unheralded in the paradeof pictures.Ra.mu, however, is such an actor that his performances are delights to watch. This performance is no exception He portrays a drunken lawyer who has not appeared in court for 20 years, having taken to drink after his wife ran away with another man. But when the body of a stranger is found in his house and his daughter is found to be involved in the killing, he takes on the defense of the accused, who is his daughter's sweetheart. He issuperb, both in his portrayal of a sot and of a courtroom lawyer.Others in the cast are good, Director Decoin having had a goodeye fnr type casting but it is Raima all the way.
