(Courier Photo).Pow Wow champs toldTAMA (CNS)—Residents of the Mesquakie Indian Settlement at Tama swept championships in all divisions of the annual Pow Wow dance contests last weekend.The 59th annual Mesquakie Pow Wow was conducted Sunday and Monday after, being postponed in mid-August because of . heavy rains and flooding.In addition to the dance contests, an exhibit hall with native artifacts, an Indian village and traditional Indian fry bread were featured.Dale Buffalo, 16, won the1200 first prize in the Men's Western Championship Dance Contest, which concluded Monday’s performances.Jody Durin, 15, and Kelvin Johnson, 16, both also of the Mesquakie Settlement, placed second and third, respectively-.‘ Violet Cleveland won the |75 first prize in the women’s dance competition Monday night. Ada K. Old Bear of the Settlement placed second and Theresa Martin, a Chippewa from Sisseton, S.D., was third..Myron Wanatee Jr., 11, wasfirst in. the boys’ 5-14 dance competition. Jeanette Bear, 14, (laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bear, was first in the girls’ 9-14 contest.Larry Yazzie, 7. son of Bemadine Charlie, was first in the boys’ 8 and under contest.
