Tom-Toms Are Again Heard in State Park in Rock Island As Indians Open Annual Three-Day PowwowThe 'Redman again took over Black Hawk state park in Rock Isjand Saturday.Before an estimated 1,500 persons, tribesmen and their wives of the Fox and Sauk Indians, captivated their enraptured audience wilh a wide assortment o£ ceremonial and war dances.Threat o£ rain curtailed the crowd for the opening performance of the 10th annual Iijdlen powwow, but officials predicted greater crowds for ihis afternoon's program and evening event which starts at 8 p. in. Two more performances are sot for Labor Day, one at 2:30 p. m. and the olher at 8 p. m.The savage resonance of the lom-toms which formed the background lor most of the dances Saturday night lent an authenticity to the proceedings and the dancers—numbering approximately 45—perfomed flawlessly.Dancers ranged from the smallest brave to the strapping leaders. And the squaws aryl maidens took part in the activities.There were war dances, a lovq song by John Bear and Harvey Lasley in the Mesquakie tongue, and the graceful swan dance.Two grandsons of Chief Pu-ihetonequa, Charles and Frank, performed (he Eagle dance, a religious ceremony, which gav« (he crowd a distinct thrill.Other dances included the Buffalo dance, a ritual dance before a buffalo hunt, snake dance,friendship, pipe, bean or harvestand Mestiuakie dances.In event of inclement weather today and Monday, powwow officials said the programs wilL be given in the Bock Island armory.The powwow also features a wildlife exhibit loaned lor the occasion by the Illinois department of conservation.-oREV.
