But we people right in vit oar own home towns should practice Mc «what we preach. We ought to do it4 for our own protection. All of us who . •work in the mills have a life stake f cfsqf/iin the industry. It gives us our em-ployment, and the more wood used, the more employment for us. That' cog Is why I do not like to see wood sub-1 the ititutes in mill' towns. A little (era while ago my own town of Bend put I T in a water pipe system, using iron pri pipe. The system cost us about coi $600,000. Some of the men who thr voted to put in the iron pipe were1 * mill men. They didn't think. After it was all done,* we realized that, as far as pressure and durability went, for our purposes we might as j jje well have used wooden pipe. I poi“The cost would have been only a third of what we did pay for the v present system. Then it was agreed I should go around and see what eomld be done to extend the market ’tor wood.“I don't like to see patent shingles wed. All things being equal, we want wood. One of our Jobs in Bend was to beat a bond issue of $28,000 with which it was proposed to build a steel highway bridge.“Then we turned around and secured a wooden bridge for the locality that cost about $7,000. Astime has paused I have been goingfurther and further into this campaign.”On the arrival of the special train from Newport it was switched over , to the Northern Pacific tracks, from ^here the passengers who desired ,.took the trip on the lake.
