Sailors sink Valley 7-6; Dav successfulBy DON SHAFFER Record-Argus Sports WriterSTONEBORO — Somebody forgot to tell the Conneaut Valley High School football team that Lakeview was supposed to win Saturday’s French Creek Valley Conference game.The Indians of first-year Head Coach Steve Neal came into the game with a record of 2-16 during theKast two seasons. One never would ave known, however, as the visiting Indians gave Lakeview all it wanted, before the Sailors emerged 7-6.The win gave Sailor rookie Head Coach Bernie Davis career victory number one.“We did some good things, and we did some poor things,” Davis said, adding, “Offensively, we were inconsistent. We thought that there were a lot of things open for us, but they are hard to do when you’re in your own territory. We didn’t get to do a lot of the things that we had planned to do.”Poor field position forced the Sailors to rely on the running game, with senior tailback Rodeny Wright doing most of the work, picking up 71 of the Sailors’ 111 rushing yards.When the Sailors nad field position to work with they made the best of it, catching the Indian defense offguard when Sailor senior wingback Bill Beith broke loose on a first-quarter streak pattern.Faced with a second-down-and-one situation with 4:04 remaining in the first auarter, Davis called for Beith to go long on a streak pattern. Beith broke open in the Indian secondary and was hit in stride at the 25-yard line with a scoring aerial from senior quarterback Dave Campbell.Without having time to as much catch his breath, Beith booted the extra point that gave the Sailors a 7-0 advantage.“When we got out of our own ter ritory, I thought we did pretty well,” Davis added, referring to the Sailor offense.The Sailor defense, menawhile, was holding the Valley offense in checkThrough the first 22 minutes, the Indians had not even gained a single first down and had a minus-two yards total offense, with Sailor defenders Tom Gander and Raymond Powell recording sacks totalling 15 yards in losses.But with 1:23 remaining in the first half, Conneaut Valley’s Kyle Wensel came up with a big play. Campbell hit tight end Gander with a quick hitter that Gander collected and began to tuck the ball under his arm. Com ing from his cornerback position, Wensel took the ball away from Gander and returned it 20 vards to the Sailor 40-yard line Conneaut Valley immediately called for a time out.Two incomplete passes and a delay of game penalty set up the Indians witn a third-and-15 situation from the Sailor 45. Quarterback Mike Gibson threw down the left sideline and senior Matt Smith made an over-the-shoulder catch of the aerial at the LHS 17-yard lineThat completion, Gibson’s first after six straight incompletions seemed to give the Indians the confidence that they were searching for, as Gibson and Smith hooked up on a 13-yard completion on the next play that moved the ball to the 4-yard line. Jeff Mattis carried for two yards before junior Todd Warner pulled the Indians to within a point with a two-vard dive over left guard Valley elected to go for a two-point conversion, but Gibson, on a keeper, was tackled by Beith at the 5-yard line The Indians also were guilty of holding on the play.In the second half neither team supplied much offense, as the two teams slugged it out between the 20-vard lines.The Indians did have one scoring opportunity midway through the third period when Campbell, dropping back to pass, had the ball knock eel out of his hands, and an Indian defender recovered at the Lakeview 16-vard line.Gibson fumbled the snap from center on first down and lost three yards, before three consecutive incompletions silenced the drive. Gibson failed to complete a pass in the second halt, and Powell and Beith recorded second-half interceptions, as did Campbell Campbell’s pickoff — a leaping interception — came with only 35 seconds remaining that sealed the Sailor w in.“It was ugly, but it w'as a win,” Davis concluded.NOTES — Powell recorded a sack and an interception..
