celebrating 75th birthdayScouts areThe Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 75th anniversary in the United States. Its original incorporation was in February,1910.Scouting came to Alton with the organization of a new Scout troop in May, 1911. The troop was chartered directly to the National Council of the BSA, as were the successive troops which were organized in the area.From this humble beginning, the Alton Local Council, BSA, was organized in 1920, and was comprised of the Alton and Wood River areas.C. C. STEWART was hired as the first scout executive. Later he left the profession to start an insurance business in Alton.In 1922, the name of the council was changed to the Alton-Wood River Council. In 1930, the name “Piasa Bird Council” was selected' following a name contest conducted throughout the area.Also in 1930, the council territory was expanded from Alton and Wood River to include Jersey andCalhoun counties, the southern half of Greene and Macoupin counties and the northern half of MadisonCounty.MORE THAN 100,000 young men and young women have had membership in the Scouting program in the Piasa Bird Council in its 65-year history. More than 35,000 men and women have held adult leadership positions.Scouting has been made possible through the unique partnership/ sponsorship of local churches, civic clubs, school parent groups,business and industry, and fraternal organizations vrtio use the BSA program as their tool for helping achieve the goals of their own organizationsSince Eben Rogers Sr. served as first president of the council, 27 more civic leaders of the area have given leadership as elected presidents. James D. Handley serves as the current president.During the same period, 12 men have served as professional Scout Executive of the council, with Carl E. Timmins currently in the post.1
