Piano Stylings Show TrainingBy HOLLY SPENCEA review column of “usually rock sounds” turns to quieter music for the listening collection.I had never heard of Monty Alexander. After listening to his album “Taste of Freedom” (MGM SE-4736), I’ll remember him and be waiting for more of his sounds. His piano stylings speak of extensive musical training with their difficult rhythms and flowing chords.Alexander, who does some of the composing, moves with ease from solid Latin tunes to upbeat pop and rockarrangements and slower ballads. His light and rather staccatoed styling meld togetherwith rather technical and clever musical bridges.A variety of piano talents are put to use on such tunes as: “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Something,” “Gingerbread Man” and other favorite contemporary tunes.
