Thomas Condemns Huge Bomb TestsCHICAGO, Oct. 29:~JB—Socialist leader Norman Thomas said the explosion of a 50 megaton nuclear bomb by the Soviet Union would be a “monstrouscrime.And he added, “If our owngovernment does it, that too willbe a monstrous crime.” -Thomas spoke Saturday night at the annual Eugene V. Debs dinner sponsored by the Illinois Socialist - Party - Socialist Democratic Federation in the Midland Hotel. Debs was a Socialist and labor leader who died in 1926.Thomas, six times Socialist candidate for President, told the 250 persons at the dinner that if there is a nuclear war, there will not be enough survivors to provide civilized leadership afterward.Because of radioactive fallout, Thomas said, all nuclear tests are a declaration of war on mankind.
