Madsen art work#Fergus Falls Community CollegePaintings by the late Mr. Emil A. Madsen (1905-1970) were hung this week in the lobby of the Community College Humanities building, and are rapidly attracting the attention of visitors to the exhibit for the exciting color and realism he has captured in them.Emil A. Madsen was born in Denmark and came to America in 1923 when he was eighteen. By trade he was a baker and owned and operated a bakery in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1946 he moved to Battle Lake, Minnesota where he built and operated Madsen's Resort and store on Blanche Lake. The resort business left his winter months fairly free but his painting did not begin until1957.In 1957 he visited his home town, Bornholm, Denmark. The island. Bornholm, was a favorite of many artists. Emil took notice of their work and decided that he could paint also. On returning to Battle Lake hg bought white lead, three basic colors, turpentine, oil, a few cheap brushes and began to dabble on a piece of masonite board. For never having any formal instructions, he progressed rapidly, learning from every painting he finished, developing a style completely his own.Mr. Madsen painted approximately 200 paintings in the following 14 years. Of these paintings each was different.
