Description of the Colorful Col. SummersA letter has recently been received from John E. Mcliroy, Jr., of Kensington, Maryland, tor which the compiler desires to express his thanks, as Mr. Mcliroy has replied in giving information relative to Col. Ed Summers, and his noted local enterprise, as recalled in Notes Along the Way October 8.In telling of his father, John E. Mcliroy, :Sr., of 703 Portland Ave., Huntingdon, anaged native of the county who has also resided there his entire life, Mr. Mcliroy, Jr., writes: 'During this period he knew most of the people of whom you have written and has discussed many of your articles with me. Your , article of October 8th of this year included a ) reference to Colonel Ed Summers which re- ; called to Dad some of his memories of Echo I Glen and of the Castilian Gardens.With the thought you might wish to add ‘ any available material to your notes, I am for- ! warding this information to you. jMr, Mcliroy, Sr.'s, description of Colonel i summers declares he was a powerfully built man weighing approximately 300 tbs., noted throughout the county for his physical prowess. Noted also as an extremely pleasant -gentleman and always jolly, enjoying lire in ' every way. Mr. Mcllroy's tales of feats of i strength performed by Colonel Summers are ; astounding. In addition to operatina the : Castilian Gardens and Echo Glen, Summers was also an auctioneer and operated a brick : yard for good measure; the latter located along ' Eisner's mill-race, between the Pennsylvania : Railroad and the Juniata River. He was also : proprietor 'of the first milk route in the • Borough of Huntingdon.
