New White Stag Plant Proposedchines and Juke boxes were approved by the council and will- Plans of the WhiteStagManufacturing Company to increase local employment from 140 to 300 after construction of a new plain at me city industrial site were discussed at the meeting of the city council last Thursday night.The Mayor pointed out that plants could not locate on the 65-acre site south of the city unless water and sewer mains are made available at the site through ^ the bond issue which, will be presented to the voters next Tuesday.Wmte Stag, witn headquarters in Portland, Oregon, purchased the local garment plant about two years ago, shortly after the death of Ralph Hodges, co-owner and general manager of the plant here.The firm formerly manufactured women’s sports clothing for White Stag on con-. tract.The City has agreed to give White Stag a long-time lease on about 10 acres of the property, where new buildings will be erected.The present building on the MKT right-of-way may be made available to a smaller industry.Officials of White Stag have indicated that the new plant will be built in Checotah during 1972. No formal announcement has yet been made.The contract with billy Spears for lease of the pasture land at the industrial site, was cancelled and Spears money was returned. The Mayor said that Spears cattle had been getting out of the pasture since many vehicles had been going onto the property at the pottery plant location.License fees on pool halls, cafes, dairy bars, pinball ma—be continued at least one year.The mayor stated that he and members of the council had been Invited to attend a meeting of | the Oklahoma Good Roads Association in Oklahoma City, Thursday, where the city would receive a plaque in recognition of the streetblackstopping program. The group will leave by chartered buses.Members of the newly organized Checotah Kiwanis Club recently voted to support the City administration in its plan to lay a new blackstop sidewalks from southside elementary school to the end of the pave-* ment on South Second St.School children, at the present time, are forced to walk in the street with the traffic.Mayor Beaird has stated that he has men and equipment and will finish the job at an early date.Joe S. \flhite was sworn in as a new member of the Council representing ward 1.
