Lakeview wins FCVC, clinches playoff spotBy DON SHAFFER Record-Argus Sports WriterCONNEAUT LAKE - The l-akeview High School football team clinched a spot in the District 10 Division II football playoffs and wrapped up the 1986 French Creek Valley Conference championship with a 29-15 win over host Conneaut I,ake Saturday afternoon The Sailors will meet Fairview, the Erie County League titlist, in the first round of the 1)10 playoffs at a site to be determined The Reynolds High School football team will face defending champion Northwestern in the other Division U semifinal.The Sailors (6-1 overall, 6-0 in the FCVC) are assured of the spot, because Maplewood (3-1, the FCVC’s other Division II squad) will not be able to reach the required six wins because of a teachers’ strike in the Penncrest School District that cut its season short.Lakeview first-year Head Coach Bernie Davis was proud of his club’s accomplishments.“I kept telling myself that we would find out what kind of character this football team has,” said Davis recalling when the Sailors trailed 15-7 through three quarters “We showed what kind of character we had. It took us too long to get going — we didn’t start playing foot ball until the middle of the third quarter.”Lakeview senior all purpose back Bill Beith broke off a 63-yard run on a counter play for a touchdown to open the fourth quarter; then senior classmate Rodney Wright added a two-point conversion run that tied the game at 15-all with 11:50 remaining.“I’m coaching (at Lakeview) because I like running the wishbone,” said Davis. “The play that Beith scored on was notning more than a simple counter ... We trapped it.”A tumble recovery deep in Indian territory by defensive end Jason Armstrong set up the next Sailor score, a 9-yard bolt by Wright. Armstrong covered a Kurt Morini fumble at the Indians’ 9-yard line and it took the Sailors iust one play to capitalize. With only one game remaining, and then the playoffs, that was very important for our team,” said Davis.Conneaut Lake scored its twotouchdowns in a span of approximately three minutes, aided by a couple of Sailor miscues.When Sailor Joe Gargasz mishandled a punt at the Lakeview 19-yard line, the Indians were there to cover the loose ball Jason Morian scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 1-yard plunge and also added the conversion run, giving the Indians a 8-7 lead midway through the third periodLakeview gained only four yards on its next possession, and Wright was set to punt from his own end zone, but a nigh center snap forced Wright to run with the ball and he was tackled at the 1 yard line Morian carried over on the ensuing play and Conneaut Lake, following Morini’s successful kick, took a 15-7 lead.Davis felt the key to the game came with Morian’s second score.“I think that’s when the kids woke up and decided to play football. We certainly didn’t come ready to play football“We were flat, and the line was not coming off on the football The line was hitting and slipping off their blocks. We expected a 6-2 and a 4-0 (defensive fronts) from (Lake) ... (it was) nothing different from what we expected,” Davis noted.Beith also scored the Sailors’ first touchdown, taking an option pitch from Campbell and scoring from eight yards out in the second periodNOTES — Lakeview will conclude its regular season on Saturday when they play at Saegertown. Kickoff time is 3 p.m. because Lakeview seniors are scheduled to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) that morning The game is a make-up of one missed earlier this season due to the strike . Beith, who recorded his second consecutive 100-yard performance, also had the game’s only interception...at one point during the third quarter Conneaut Lake 2-4 overall and in the FCVC) was faced with a unenviable fourth-and-34 situation... the Indians will close out their season hosting Sharps-ville...through seven games Wright has rushed for 727 yards on 146 carries, while scoring 10 touchdowns and 66 points...the Sailors have won five straight.
