Billed as a feature length affair, it should actually be cut up into its seven separate parts and served along with other short subjects.Disney’s excellence in animationis not challenged here. The man’s a master at it and really achieves some clever effects. But not seven at one time. Please! The best part of the film, and one which offers entertainment above the ordinary, is saved for the last. It’s the saga of Pecos Bill, told by the personable young king oftoday’s cinema cowboys, Roy Rogers.Pecos Bill was reared by coyotes and saw his match in no man—until he met Sluefoot Sue. Sue branded him with her cool blue eyes and donned her best and biggest bustle to lead Bill down the aisle. In the path of true love stood Sue’s wish to ride Bill’s horse, Widowmaker, before the wedding. The aptly named animal tossed Sue on her bustle and she kept bouncing onthat springy contraption until she hit the moon. Pecos Bill could only climb to the highest mountain and bay his sorrow like a coyote. And that’s why to this day all coyoteslift their heads and howl at themoon.By the way, does anyone know whatever happened to Betty Boop?'The Crusades'A Paramount picture, produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMilie. screen play by Harold Lamb, Waldemar Young and Dudley Nichols. Now showing at the State Theater.Berengaria .............. Loretta YoungRichard ................ Henry WilcoxonSaladin ...................... Ian KeithCecil B. DeMilie reissues “TheCrusades” with an introductory*talk about the battles in Palestineand films of the recent fighting. Ifit took a war to resurrect this old meller, let us have peace, but quick.DeMilie is probably the only director extant who can film a talking picture and still come up with something that looks like an oldsilent production.Henry Wilcoxon is King Richardof England in this one, leading the armies of Europe against the heathens of Islam. At Marseilles heruns out of food and is forced to marry Loretta Young in trade for 7.000 head of cattle and four shiploads of grain. The beautiful Loretta lt;and you’ve probably forgotten how beautiful she can be) promptly gets involved in plot to such an extent that the fate of all the armies on both sides hangs on the outcome of her love affair.Wilcoxon gives an impressive performance but finally sinks under the weight of stilted dialogue and situations so melodramatic they invoke laughter. It goes on for more than two hours, which is just long enough for you to come out with a headache and a citation for longevity. One other thing. An extra sold on the slave mart in the early scenes of the film wfas none other than Ann Sheridan. The fellow doing the bidding was probably one of the Warner Brothers.Take Your ChoicePARAMOUNT—Through Thursday ‘Melody Time” Walt Disney feature.
