(News-Bulletin Photo)l L Football Players, Board Honor McCollumAlter six years as a coach of the Brookfield Football Little League teams, Gene McCollum has retired.McCollum was recognized Saturday night by the league board and Little Leagueduring a seasonplayersending wiener roast. The plaque he received thanked him foifor his continuing effortand love for the boys.Himself the father of three daughters, McCollum and his coachmg staff consistently produced winningseason play.The Little League Football coaches receive no pay.Last year, the coaches requested assistance from parents and the Littlel eague Football Association was formed. It lost one game to Kirksville here by the score of 6 to 8.The league championship game, played last Sunday in Kirksvule, pitted Brookfield against the second Kirksville team. The Brookfield team lost 6 to 0, tieing with the victors for second place in the league.We’ve had a lot of help this year from businesses and individuals, and not just financial assistance, Mrs Ross said. .....^Helping at games have been Jim Kallaher, Howard Graff, Mike Buckailew, Buck Farrenkopf, George Reed, Danny Hottel, and Gene Round.In addition, Wes Rhodesdonated his time and the service of an ambulance at each home game.This year, the United Missouri Bank of Brookfield has underwritten a trip to a Kansas City Chiefs footballgame, donating $2 for the ticket of each boy attending. That game will be on Nov. 5.Little League players have attended in the past but have had no financial assistance.“We are very sorry to see Gene retire, Mrs. Ross said. “He and his fellow coaches, Dale McCollum and Roger Dodge, have done a terrific job“He’s just been great with the boys, taking time to work with them individually. It was hard going at first, getting the Little League football going,” she said, “but he saw it through.”
