Highway 1, from Port Kent, Me., to thertip of Florida* Mrs. Louise JonesDuBose, a Columbia, S. C.; writer, made Portsmouth one of her stops in her journey southward for the '‘human side” of the news,Mrs. DuBose, who is writing a feature article for her state magazine South /Carolina,” said it was her first visit in the Port City—her “pioneering experience,” as she expressed it in her quiet, southern drawl.As she was introduced to Portsmouth’s mayor, Mrs. Mary C. Dondero, she commented that Portsmouth women appear to be very active.” In her many years of experience as a writer, she remarked, Mrs. Dondero was the first lady mas’or” she had ever met.She presented Mayor Dondero with a sample cotton boll and a bottle of jessamine perfume, extracted; from South Carolina's state flower, Imouth, mentioned the John Paul Jones house, Mrs. DuBose made a notation.That interests me considerably,” she explained, “because this John Paul Jones took his last name from one of my ancestors.”In making her trip southward, Mrs, DuBose plans to stop in at least one city in every state. She left foi’ Boston Wednesday after-The Friendly Conference of Protestant Churches of Kittery, Eliot, York and Ogunqult will ’convene Friday in the Baptist church at Cape Neddick, Me., for its 6Sth session. The conference has been organized 15 years.The session will open with devotions led by the Rev, J. Wesley Stuart, pastor of the host church. The Rev. Roger Hill Of the South Berwick Baptist church will speak on Faith of Our Fathers.”The second address of the morning will be Avenues That Lead to God by the Rev. Ernest M. Jones, pastor of* the First Baptist church at Kittery Point.Meetings will reconvene at 1:3Q pm when the Rev. Willis M, McLaughlin of the South Eliot Methodist church will give the devotions. A business meeting -will be held at2:20 pm.The Rev. Harold W. Curtis, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist church, Portsmouth, will give the final address, Fishers of Men.” Present officers of the conference are president, the Rev. J. Rupert Simonds, Eliot Congregational church; vice president, the Rev. G. Stephen Johnston, Second Christian church, Kittery; secretary and treasurer, the Rev. Joseph M. Clare, Second Methodist church, Kittery.
