October 21, 2004**ReflecThe season of Autumn is quickly approaching and the gorgeous trees that decorated the yards and the countryside blending their shades for coolness and beauty are now dropping leaves. Although the seasons are quite exciting there is one that could stay away for a longer time...winter. For some reason the long winter justmeans one long shiver to#me and I won’t thaw out until spring. Even in those old days it was the same and the only time I experienced warmth was being in front of the wood burning stove, or covered from head to toe with numerous quilts. And possibly the , times I had to wear pajamas underneath the overalls and two shirts with a coat or two over the entire wardrobe with heavy socks and even mittens. The kitchen would be somewhat warmer than any of the bedrooms because it was the only other room with any heat. I’m guessing that Mom stayed warm while cooking on that old wood cook stove which later became a more modern coal oil cook stove. She always managed to have a delicious breakfast ready before the sun rose over the horizon and I just must admit that I never did tell her about her well spent time. The only thing I didn’t care for was the oatmealshe boiled ever so often.%But, I’ll be the first to say that had she not made me eat the stuff I’d have been starving by ten o’clock. Had it not been for the sausage patties or country folks bacon she always had ready I may have starved. I would tear theThe Post-RegisterBy Dorothy Tayisirsausage or bacon apart and add it to the bowl of oatmeal. (I’m guilty of letting it be known to Equal Half about having to addto the bowl of oatmeal in*order to endure. He didn’t mind as long as he got his bowl ever so often.)With the fall season comes football. And yes, I’ll be the first to admit that I never did see a game until Junior College days. It was for certain that the bus passed by the practice field each day on its way back to Hays, in Cooke County. Somewhere along the way Andy Griffen made a talking record about a country person witnessing his first football game. Each time I heard that record it was funnier than before.Surely I’ve told you folks about the excitement of being invited to see my veryfirst game. It was one of those childless preachers and his wife who invited me to go along to town and watch the game with a group of young people. But, asking Mom about the trip she saidthe usual, “go ask your Dad.”And Dad said emphatically, “NO”. When we heard about the wreck that a few of the community young folks had experienced we were thankful that Dad had responded with an emphatic, “no”. (We were thankful that broken bones were about the extent of injuries received in the wreck.)Soooo...bring on the fall, dropping leaves, and football.Hebs: 11:25 “Choosing rather to suffer affection with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season:”
