The Tonight show was renamed “The Jack Paar Show” oniy after several successful seasons. But Andy Griffith — who wasn’t as well known as either of the other comedians—has started out as star of “The Andy Griffith Show.Griffith is a tall, country-style comedian with a florid turn of phrase somewhere east of Ernie Ford and south of Bing Crosby. Although he made his first marks in show business acting—No Time for Sergeants” on Broadway and “Oniontion pictures—he became known to the big TV audience as a Southern monologist on the Sundaynight variety shows.Returns To ActingGriffith now has returned to acting, and one of the big problems that had to be threshed out was Just how funny Andy was going to be allowed to be.“I liked the series because it seemed to have a lot of comic possibilities, he said. “And naturally I thought that I’d be the one to do all the jokes. Then we! added Don Knotts to the cast as my deputy. He’s a very funny man.“Suddenly we discovered that it just wasn’t working out having two comedians trying to be funny. So now I play straight man to Don in our scenes together. I get to be funny in the other scenes.Andy found the going difficult in the period between his first Broadway success and the motion picture.Doesn’t WorryI don’t worry about losing my North Carolina accent, he explained. “I live on Roanoke Island and spend all the time I’m not working there. In fact, I stayed there for a solid year until I got myself picked for Destry Rides Again. The opening of the| new clinic is one of many phases i of progress completed in the town during the past several months.; Priding in more than 50 yearsof continuous progress, the town residents yesterday played host to Dr. Josephine E. Newell, who owns the clinic. The complete operation of the new establishment will be maintained under her supervision.On Main Street The clinic is located on Main street, in the heart of the progressive town, and is completely equipped with the newest and most modern furnishings available.Complete air conditioning and forced air heat add to the comfort of the building, along with an amplified music system in the two lobbies fronting the Main street.Medical facilities of the clinic include two treatment rooms, two lobby s, a centralized reception booth, a business office, consultation room and a fully equipped laboratory.Eighteen phases of the historyof medicine are told in picture form lining the walls of the lobbies. Available parking space for .at least 15 automobiles also is a 'special feature of the new clinic.Former Practice Prior to the opening of the clinic. Dr. Newell practiced medicine in Bailey in a privately owned office. She began her practice in Bailey on January 1, 1951.Dr. Newell is a native of Henderson in Vance county. She attended Vance county public schools and continued her education at the| University of South Carolina and the University of Maryland.She received her post graduate training at Women’s hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended the Medical school of Columbia. South Carolina. She taught school for one year in Henderson, after which she reentered the University of Maryland and received her doctor’s degree.Dr. Newell is assisted in the clinic operation by Mrs. Juanita Haskins of Bailey, a registered nurse; and Mrs. Bonnie M. Perry of Bailey, receptionist.The clinic building was constructed by Dalmer Pearson, a local contractor.
