Ry., a buggy containing two men, Henrj ] Heusman 28 years old and Carl Hoefer .vvprp Qtrnplr hv the* ‘Vochv^llo litntforlHeusman was killed and Hoefer badlv \ injured. «They were on their way home from the Hoxie farm, east of Thornton, where the}' had been engaged in bailing hay. As they approached the railroad tracks a switch engine was on the crossing. They waited a moment until it had moved out of the wav, and then diove ahead, the gates not having been lowered.Heusman was caught on the pilot of of the engine, and probably instanth killed. Hoefer was thrown about 40 feet, and though his life w as not taken instantly, he received injuries that make his recovery haidly possible.Notwithstanding the accident occuied at a crossing the engineer claimed he did not know that he had hit the rig, and the body of Ileusman was carried on the pilot of the engine to Momence, where it was removed after a telegram of inquiry had been sent down the line.The horse was killed and the buggy smashed to kindling. Portions of the vehicle were caught m the engine and distributed along the track, some of the spokes being picked up at Glenwood.
