Jules Banbien, it young Frcnch-Canadian. also inlove with Hilda, the girl, discovers McDonald s purpose and contrives ultimately to thwart it. The unique fight between McDonald and Jules Baubien at the conclusion of the last act is the ! most distinctive feature of the play. The fight is staged in complete darkness. One only hear the deep breathing and muttered Imprecations of thecombatant, and the final scream and-Sdying groan of the loser, of whose identity he is in doubt until a match ! is struck, revealing Baubien kneeling over the oust retched body of McDonald.The work of Lionel Lawrence, as Jules Baubien. leaves somethiug to be desired. His interpretation of the part is somewhat marred by a marked ten-dency to overact. J. Merrill Holmes, as William McDonald, is, in the main acceptable, though hardly possessing the physique necessary to an impressive rendition of the role Walter Curtis, as Andrew McTavish. leavesnothing to be desired in the matter of stature, at least, while his Scotch bur is altogether good. Miss Marie l.ati more makes a pretty and pleasing Hilda, and Walter Weems a clever and mirth provoking George Huntley.
