Owen’s wife, who came with him on his return to Allegany County, died the winter of 1946.One of his hobbies, hunt went on to write, was building bee hives and many of the stands made by him were sold to bee cul-turists. Honey was one of his staple articles of diet. His study of the habits of bees taught him much, he said, and there wasn’t much about bees he didn’t know.Some days the only person Mr. Slider saw was the mail man. The only time there was any traffic at all over the Green Ridge wilds (1946) was during the hunting season.Mr. Slider said he never shot anything himself but he didn’t object to others who did enjoy hunting.
