1Itt fs13BV 1 . 1V I 1s[I1sI1llX'nderpnronnd Opening: in Tennenwfa Strange Sight.A cave which it is believed will eclipse the Mammoth cave in Kentucky and the Luray caverns in \ ir-ginia has been discovered in Claiborne County, Tennessee. For years a small hole in the side of Cumberland mountain has attracted the attention of persons passing on account of the stiff breeze wrich came from it; so arong was it that a person’s hat would N blown off Lis head.The place is located on the farm of Mr. William Housely. He became curious to know something further of this underground passage, and by blasting made an opening into which a man could walk. A party of explorers was formed and on entering they found after travelling about a hundred feet a magnificent chamber, which was so large that a regiment could manoeuver in it. The lloor and walls of the chamber were smooth.Leading from the chamber were four passages. One passage was selected by the exploring party, because it was the one through which the strong current of air came. When about a half mile from the big chamber the passage began to widen and a strange sound began to fall upon the ears of the ex-porers. The sound was like distant music.As the party advanced the sounds became more distinct. On going further they entered another big chamber and here they found the cause. Away up the incline, which set in a few feet from the entrance, was a long row of stalacites and stalegmites, making their presence known by a phosphorescent glow, which showed the many peculiar shapes of these formations. The noise and music could now be accounted for. It was caused by the heavy current of air passing through these cones. Mr. Ifouseley, the owner of the little farm on which this cave is located, will explore further.
