Belgium bestows bust on SymphonyA bronze bust of Eugene Ysaye, Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony by the Belgian government following intermission of the Saturday, October 14, concert at Music Hall. Consul General Jacques Melsens, representative of the Belgian government in Chicago, will present the bust to Edgar J. Mack, Jr., Chairman of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees.The Presentation is being made in honor of the Cincinnati Symphony’s important role in the life of the famous Belgian virtuoso and conductor.Eugene Ysaye hadalready established an international reputation for his violin virtuosity before being appointed Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony. He had performed here on several occasions and was invited to direct the 1918 May Festival. His performance at the Festival won the hearts of Cincinnatians and he was offered the post of permanent conductor. In his four year tenure with the Symphony, Ysaye built this reputation as one of the finest conductors in the world. He continued a distinguished career as virtuoso, conductor, and composer until his death in Belgium in 1931.
