psroRDSBv MARY CAMPBELLAP Newsfeatures WriterThe Wild Ones stand in extremely unusual position for a rock ‘n’ roll group — they are the talk of the town in one city and almost unknown everywhere else and they’re better known by adults than by teenagers. The Wild Ones went into Arthur — a discotheque opened by Sybil Burton in New York in May — and shortly thereafter Sybil married one of them, 25-year-old Jordan Christopher. Arthur, so named because beat-le George Harrison once said that’s what he calls his haircut — became the most crowded, most talked-about discotheque in New York. It still is.It’s all a lot of fun for the customers, doing the frug side by side W'ith Sybil in a mirror-lined room full of people and din, while her husband sings from the center of a platform. It’s fun for the five guys on the stand, too, but they know that there must be more if they’re going to become “known.”First step was a contract with a major label, United Artists, in mid-June and an LP ,“The Arthur Sound,” released in September. The cover pictures the group, with Sybil atop the shoulder of organist Tom Graves, 19. Included are two original tunes, “Wild Way of Living” and “People Sure Act Funny” — melodies by Chuck Alden, 22, and lyrics by Jordan Christopher.Alden, Christopher and Eddie Wright, 22, play guitar and all three sing. Tom Graves describes them: Alden, clear, something like a Beach Boy; Christopher, more grainy, something like Bob Dylan; Wright, with soul, something of a colored sound. Tommy Trie, 21, plays drums, lie and Graves have studied music and Graves has had two years of college.Next step is to release a single. The group will cut several sides and UA will release v hat it considers the best. Nothing will be lifted from the album because that was recorded live and has some background noise and applause — bad for radio play.Though Christopher Is the best-known name and on the stand the others seem to be following Alden, the group calls itself a co-op, without a leader. Decisions are made after five-part discussion.First national TV exposure came with a spot on the Sept. 27 Steve Lawrence show. First live exposure before teen-agers (Arthur sells liquor and patrons must be 18 or older) was nine days at the Brooklyn Fox Theater, coming on for one song or two, on the bill with a lot of other acts, after the feature movie. Now the group feels ready — with LP selling, single coming out, one TV and one stage exposure — to undertake its first promotion tour. They explain that this will be one-nighters around the country, again on the bill with other acts. They haven’t decided yet which tour they’ll join. They hope to end the tour in Los Angeles, which will put them in the right place to be TV variety and pop music show guests.Graves says, “Once a group is established, you can do concerts, alone. It’s better actually, because you don’t do them every night. But you’re always traveling around.”Graves says they have three singers, with different sounds, who take turns doing the lead, to maintain versatility. Maybe they’ll soon have a fourth. Tommy Trie says, “I’m going to be a good singer, I think. I feel singing more than I ever felt anything.”“If you have only one sound,” Graves says, “you can flood the market and get a couple of hits out and people get tired ofyour sound.” Eddie Wrightadds, “Like the Four Seasons.”The disk jockey at Arthur plays a lot of Bob Dylan records in between performances by the Wild Ones. “Nobody cuts himlyric-wise,” Graves says. “Singing-wise most of the fellows dig more a soul kind of singer. Solomon Burke really sings ‘Maggie’s Farm.’ He does a lot of Dylan.”Graves likes the currently“in” message lyrics. “All songshve lyrics and as long as they do, they might as well mean something. I think it is something that is going to stay.”Wright disagrees, “There is so much, I think people are going to tire of it. Now that everybody is back in school, I think there is going to be a change. Every once in a while there is a flood in the record market, then every four months or so all the records change drastically. I think when they change, there is going to be a new trend. The Wild Ones — that is what it will be.”TIIE TOP TENYESTERDAY, BeatlesIIANG ON SLOOPY, Me CoysYOU WERE ON MY MIND, We FiveEVE OF DESTRUCTION, McGuireTHE IN CROWD, l ewisTREAT HER RIGHT, Head CATCH US IF YOU CAN, Dave Clark Five YOU'VE GOT YOUR TROUB-LES, Fortunes DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC, Lovin’ Spoonful BABY DON'T GO, Sonny and Cher■:
