The legend of the hornet spooklightBy Felicia CorbaleyMysterious lights have appeared around the world throughout history, such asthe spooklight in Noel, Missouri. It is said that these lights appear in the distance with a regularity that seldom disappoints those who come to view them.Glowing in the night with an eerie, soft color, they sometimes pulse, sometimes dance about, usually near the ground or horizon, according to spectators. There have been many intense investigations by both ameteurs and by professionals and as ot yet, nobody has come up with an explanation for this most unusual phenomenon.According to observers to the spook light, if a person tries to move toward it, or make any sudden moves the light just immediately disappears.Movements of the lights appear to be at random....They appear and disappear, usually suddenly. When approached, the lights seemingly recede, only to reappear behind the observer. Some lights appear to interact with people approaching them, reappearing behind observers as if playing a game. One observation was that of WC HS teacher John Fitzgibbon, who encountered the spook light several years ago.Fitzgibbon was sitting in the back of a truck with some friends when 75 yards in front of him the light appeared. It seemed to be hovering over the road according to Fitgibbon, and then all of a sudden it split and formed two glowing lights ot a pale yellow color. When one ot the boys began to speak the lights disappeared. 1 think we will never know what the spooklight is. Fitzgibbon said.I his light varies in size from softball to the size of a basket ball observers proclaim. The . legend of this light also varies. One myth is of a lantern-carring ghost; another of a Quapaw maiden who drowned herself in the river when her warrior was killed in battle; and yet another one of a confederate sergeant, executed by cannonfire, searching for his head.Last but not least, a miner looking for his children.According to senior TJ Webb, the spooklight reapeatedly reappeared and disappeared. It’s movement resembled an invisible ghost with a waddle in his walk that seemed to make the light bounce.I he light kept a constant color of white and every time it reappeared it was closer. It freaked me out! Webbsaid. There are probably more myths of how this light came to be, but these are just a few.Continuously appearing spooklights are found around the world.
