Stars make for Best. Comic Con. Ever.By Randall KingWHEN the first Manitoba Comic Con convened in the cramped quarters of the Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park in 2006, its founders vowed that the celebration of comics, and sci-fi and genre TV and movies would move to the roomier environs of the Winnipeg Convention Centre within five years.Lo and behold, it took just three years to get there. It launches today with rooms devoted to video, anime and gaming, as well as a costume contest.Early last year, the convention announced its intentions to draw horror director George Romero to the festivities. Alas, Romero is at work making his fifth zombie movie, but the con still boasts an impressive list of recognizable, fan-friendly guests. On the roster:LeVar Burton: Burton is in town working on the Lifetime TV movie The Taking of Sarah. Last year, she was seen as Lara-El, Superman’s biological mother, in the TV series Smallville.Lou Ferrigno: Fresh from a cameo appearance as a security guard in the big-screen The Incredible Hulk, Ferrigno proved he didn’t need any computer-generated enhancement when he played the un-jolly green giant in the 1978-82 TV series of the same name. He will be signing autographs Sunday at noon. Just don’t make him angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.John De Lancie: De Lancie has played doctor in a couple of horror-thrillers, including The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and the recent Pathology. But his best known recurring role — and the reason for his presence here — is certainly the mischievous, self-indulgent, all-powerful Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation.Gerrit GrahamWinnipeg just loves this guy, an actor who played the ultimate glam rocker in Phantom of the Paradise in 1974. He put in a couple of appearances at the local Phantom fanfest Phantompalooza (where he was an unusually good sport about signing bathroom plungers). For more information, log onto http:// manitobacomiccon.com/randall.king@freepress.mb.ca
