Surprise—It s The Onos!By BRYAN GRAYYoung Americans WriterIt happened in Toronto, Canada, last week during a concert entitled “Rock ’N Roll Revival” — the group that no one had ever seen appeared on stage!On Saturday evening the Canadian radio stations began flashing the “rumor” that the Plastic Ono Band would make a surprise appearance. Tickets immediately sold out and many young persons waited at the airport for a sneak look at the group.The 30,(WO fans attending the concert applauded vigorously for the first acts — early 50’s rock stars Bo Didley and Little Richard — but a hush fell over the crowd when the master of ceremonies requested the massive audience to welcome the Plastic Ono Band by lighting a match.The glow of 30,000 matches lit the hall and the mystery group (It was rumored that the Ono Band was really the Beatles with a little help from their friends) walked on stage:John Lennon dressed in a white suit, Yoko Ono in a long blue silk Japanese print, guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Vormann anddrummer Alan White.In his first live performance in almost three years, Lennon began by singing the old rock favorite “Blue Suede Shoes” and then swung into three new Lennon-McCartney tunes.But the climax finally came when John said, “This is why we’re here.” and the band swayed back and forth, giving the famous peace symbol and singing “Give Peace A Chance.”After 35 minutes the group left the stage to the ecstatic ovation of the audience. Said one girl, “I did not really understand it, but I’d rather hear the sounds of John and Yoko than the sounds of war.”Nuff said 1!For the third album in a row the Jefferson Airplanes have run into difficulties with their album cover.The new LP entitled “Volunteers” wasoriginally entitled “Volunteers of America until the Airplanes discovered there was a real group by that name threatening to sue.Then the group battled RCA-Victor (and finally won) on releasing a cover with a pic-Eric Clapton is in Ono Band.ture of the American flag on the cover. The record firm had qualms about such use of the flag, but Airplane manager Bill Thompson won them over when he produced seven LP covers utilizing the flag.Meanwhile Airplane members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen are working on a solo album for RCA with instrumental backing of friend Jimi Hendrix.
