Tricksters looking for change during UNICEF’s annual driveBy SHERRI HORVAT of The HtttklThe goblins and ghosts will soon be it your door — bearing not Just candy-mad grins but little orange boxes as well.Time to start saving one's pennies and change to drop into those boxes tor the UNICEF Halloween campaign, which officially kicked off Friday at Agnes Davidson School in Lethbridge.Miss Teen Lethbridge, Wendy Brown, was on hand with Amaida Walker-Fodden, Grade 2t and her brother, Christopher, in Kindergarten, to talk about the theme of this year’s campaign - the United Nations1 declaration of 1988 as the year of the 10 rights of the child.Those W righto are as follows: the right to affection, love and understanding; the right to adequate nutrition and med ical care; the right to protection against all forms of neglect, cruelty and exploitation; the right to a free education and tofull opportunity for play and recreation; the right toa name and nationality; the right to special care, if handi-* thecapped; the right to be among the first to receive relief in times of disaster; the right to learn to be a useful member of society and to develop individual abilities; the right to be brought up in a spirit of peace and universal brotherhood; and, the right to enjoy these rights, regardless of race, color, sex, religion or nationality.Last year, Lethbridge school children raised $5,400 through Halloween collections for UNICEF.Sheila McHugh, UNICEF's development Bducation officer, said this year's goal is to raise $8,000.UNICEF collection boxes will be available through city schools to any children interested in collecting.UNICEF sponsored programs are now saving 1.5 million children a year and through increased contributions, these initiatives could be saving an additional 5,5 million children,October is UNICEF month across Canada and Oct. 31 has been declared UNICEF Day by the federal government.,4s a volunteer organization, more than 85 cents from every dollar raised goes directly to programs supporting the rights of the child.Since 1948, the United Nations’ Childrens Fund has advocated the righto of children to an improved livelihood.Originally created to aid children and their families in post-war Europe, the fund now supports the rights of the child in 119 countries.Funding is delivered through governmental and private sources.In Canada, there are 40,000 volunteers and in Alberto there are more than 650 representing nine local committees.An expected $700,000 will be raised in Alberto alone this year.
