Higgins, the proprietor of the horse and cart, who is a market gardener with premises on Fourth street, left his horse standing outside the New Pacific Hotel, on Pacific avenue, omitting to put a weight on the horse. While he was inside the hotel some man got into the cart and drove away, so far as can be ascertained. After this the charioteer must have gone up to Rosser avenue, for a few minutes later he was seen driving down Tenth street at a furious pace. People on the street could not be certain if the horse was actually running away, but it is certain that the driver was beating the animal furiously. Then it appears the horse did run away just at the foot of Tenth street, and instead of turning the corner, charged into a lamp standard just outside the C.P.R. station and on the east side of it. The lamp and standard were smashed to pieces but the horse escaped without serious injuries and the cart was scarcely damaged at all. The driver was thrown out but seems to have been able to leave the scene immediately. As usual in such cases a large crowd of people collected and when Constable Brockland reached the scene of the accident there were several ready to volunteer information. Nothing definite could be learned, however, the only description of the alleged thief being that he was tail, wore blue overalls and a brown felt hat.I^ater one or two people said that they had seen the man lying on the road where he had been thrown from the rig. Another volunteered the information that he had been taken into the King Edward Hotel, but neither statements could be corroborated. Evidently he cannot be very seriously injured as he must have walked away with a fair speed. The police are still looking for him.Total receipts to date.
