wNearly Fitly Tear* Alt;o.Jas. McHugh, of this city, who wasa river pilot for many years, worked for the late John A. Walker in 1859, the latter being associated that time in ! the lumber business with Alexander! Stewart, of Wausau. Mr. McHugh left Stevens Point in the early morning, during the month of April, traveling on foot, and reached Wausau at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon, where he met Mr. Stewart and both went from there to Jenny, now Merrill, reaching the latter point that evening, the entire distance of over GO miles being covered without the aid of horse flesh, steam or electric power. Mr. i McHugh later ran his first fleet of lum- j ber out of the river as pilot while in the employ of Mr. Walker, the latter working as hard and diligently as any of the men who worked for him.
