The morning was spent in looking PJj over his fine fields of strawberries, raspber*. m, ries and blackberries and in looking at his wi young orchards of fruit trees. All were in fine condition, except where the crown I tei borer aod grub worm had made their usi marks in his youug strawberry vines. thlt;Mr • Beard showed the visitors one field pa of a little over one acre of strawberries Mi from which he gathered 1,800 gallons of Pa berries last year and 1,600 this year. He 2 c expects to gather two more crops from lot these vines before plowing them under. 8. Tbi-j experience contradicts the advice of Br many writers and is opposite the practice El of many growers who gather but one crop and then plow under and plant new vines.Mr. Beard’s plan is certainly much cheaper and more satisfactory and affords abetter test of the varieties grown.A thrifty grove of young walnut trees also attracted attention. The;e should be Al similar groves on every farm iu Southern IndianaOn one side of Mr Beard’s lawn is a well trimmed hemlock hedge, probably the finest in the state, which attracted favora-ble comment. 1,6Shortly afternoon the ladies present, un^ m der the euperintendency of the accom- j8 plisbished wife of the host, spread a boun-| tiful repast. After dinner the Yenowine * choir favored the assemblage with some fine music. Mrs. Beard and her young son, di Raymond, added to the musical part of the D. entertainment by some skillfully executed duettes on the pianoA visit to the apple orchard was • treat. 20 On seventy»five six-year-old Ben Davis 8j trees were growing eighty-five barrels of a apples, estimated by the yield of some that ch bad been gathered. No choicer specimens I nlt; were ever grown in this latitude. A few hi trees of Wine 8sps showed what could be 8] done with this apple by proper culture b] While it is od6 of the best if not the best |ac cookingapplegrown.it has been objected te to as being small in size and frequently tfc knotty or specked. The ones seen were w as large as toe ordinary Ben Davis, smooth I o’and highly colored. 18Mr, Beard has a lot of Russian apple j ri trees, and also plums and other trees sent t* him from the state experiment station at ii Terre Haute, the local station being on bis L farm. Much iB expected by horticulturists I* from the tests made at these stations, of 0 new fruits, grain and vegetables. joAmong the visitors at the meeting were b Mrs Sallie Osborne, of Lawrence county, ii and Dr. and Mrs. Voylesand Mr, J. Q. A. b Seip, of Harrison county. bThe day was a pleasant and profitable one to all assembled at the meeting.faT.nver* nf orvml OnflfM hnv Durham
