Sailors dominate Linesville 9-6By DON SHAFFER Record-Arcus Sports WriterSTONEBORO — The Lakeview High School football team took a big step toward the 1986 French Creek Valley Conference championship by knocking off previously-unbeaten conference-leaaer Linesville 19-6 Saturday afternoon Lakeview Head Coach Bernie Davis called his squad’s performance its best of the season.‘‘Its been two weeks since we played and the kids were hungry,” Davis stated, continuing, “I would call it our best performance of the season. ‘‘The special teams played well, the kickoft team did a nice job, the punt team did a good job, the defense played super ... it was a total team effort for us ’“Our guys did exactly what they had to do to win We controlled the ball and we controlled the clock,” Davis added.Lakeview senior Kevin Watts returned the game’s opening kickoff to the Linesville 18 yard line The Sailors moved consistently, covering the distance in 11 plays, while eating up nearly six minutes off the clock.Senior Rodney Wright capped the drive with a 6-yard run over right tackle to give the Sailors (3-1 overall. 3-0 in the FCVC) a lead they would not relenquish. Linesville senior quarterback Tim Haworth was attempting to throw a sideline pattern, but Gargasz stepped in front of the intended receiver and made it to the corner of the end zone before being tackled. Van-Dusen’s extra point kick was wide right and Lakeview led 13-7 with 11:31 left in the third quarter.“Joe (Gargasz) is kind of a quiet kid, but when it’s time to play, he plays. (And) He set up our last touchdown for us with a nice (25-yard) punt return,” Davis said in praise of his senior cornerback-kick returner. Gargasz added a second interception late in the fourth period that sealed the Lions’ fate.On its next possession, Linesville gambled on a fourth-and-four play from its own 31 But when Haworth’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the Sailors took over on downs with nineminutes left in the third quarter. ! Though it did not score on its ensuing • possession, Lakeview was able to lceep the Lions pinned on their half of the field for tne remainder of the game‘‘Our defensive ends played well for us, but they have played well for us all year,” Davis said in reference to Raymond Powell and VanDusen, adding, “(Powell and VanDusen) are not big and strong, but they are tenacious ... they are very hard to block. (Powell) is quick, he’s got, quick feet. ”Powell was in on three tackles for losses, as Lakeview trapped Lion runners six times for losses totaling 30 yards.“I think it was unfortunate for Linesville that the game was played in these conditions, ’ Davis aaded in reference to a sloppy turf, adding, “(Linesville) has more of a passing attack.”Haworth completed only six of 21 attempts, and was intercepted twice by Gargasz.“Our kids looked real good today. Now we need to keep playing that way for the rest of our games,” Davis concluded.NOTES — Linesville’s Dan McCullough is the only Head Coach the school nas had in its 15-year football -program. McCullough was a coach when Davis played his collegiate football at Geneva College ..the two -teams combined for only three nalties. Lakeview was flagged for „ th of its penalties on the Lions’ first possession of the game ..the Sailors will play Cambridge Springs . Friday night in an FCVC tilt. Cam bridge Springs and Linesville tied earlier this season.. Davis announced that the Sailors will make up their game with Saegertown on Nov. 1. • The game witn Maplewood, also -missed due to the Penncrest teachers strike has not been rescheduled as of yet. “If we did (play Maplewood) I don’t know when it would De,” Davis added The Pennscrest school strike is over and games are in the process of being rescehduled, Maplewood and Saegertown will play tonight...Wright’s rushing totals for the season, through four games, include six touchdowns and 373 yards on 142 carries. Wright, a linebacker,* also is one of the team’s leading tacklers.
