Snyder seeks shot at big-time broadcastingBy BOB JACOB C-T Spurts WriterLike a high school or college athlete vying for the professional ranks, broadcaster Mike Snyder continues to seek the same. The popular veteran broadcaster who somedayhopes to handle either professional baseball, basketballor football has cropped up in Akron as he seeks the elusive dream.Snyder, the former sports director of WOBL Radio in Oberlin, left there for WJW Radio in Cleveland where he had done Cleveland State University basketball and Cleveland Force soccer. That was until this past spring when the station had a change of formats one that didn’t include play-by-play of sports or Snyder.“THEY SAID ‘Mike, you better hit the road,”’ explained Snyder, 29. “We parted on good terms.”So Snyder looked for about two months before landing in Akron at WAKR, the sports giant of the Rubber City. In addition to high school and college games, the station handles the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Indians throughout their seasons. His responsibilities as sports director currently include announcing Kent State football, the top area high school football game of the week, daily sports reports and some reporting on WAKR-TV.“IT’S A pretty filled up week,” he said. “It keeps me busy. Right now I’m happy with what I’m going to be doing. I’ve kind of bounced around the last few years. Ithink it’s going to help me a lot from that part that it’s a very well-recognized station.”Snyder looks at the move as a “lateral” one. Even though he left Cleveland and all its major league aroma, he is getting an opportunity to do more of what he wants.“I haven’t had the opportunity to do TV work or play-by-play of football,” he said. “My goal is still to do professional sports,“It's a crazy business. I still feel today I still have the same enthusiasm I had four years ago, five years ago and two years ago. As long as I still enjoy doing ballgames, I’ll do this. I think the next five years will be big years for me.”
