September 28. 11»/2 was Uie night the Syracuse War Memorial was rocked and rolled, as two of the most popular rock groups around, entertained a nearly capacity filled audience For this was the night the J Cells Band and Ten Years After were in townThe evening started out with a group from San Francisco. Calif, called Eggs Over Rasy. The crowd of nearly 10.000 seemed very much discus ted with the hand, the anxiety of what was to follow was overwhelming. Shouts of •'bring out J. Ceils echoed from wall to wall After a stage change, out came the beginnings of a truly great musical night The stage was quiet, when out of the darkness came the words. •*... and now. the greatest boogie band m the world the J (Jeils Band!” The roar of the crowd was deafening The lights came up and there appeared the six-man ensemble. The band was not only a pleasure to listen to. but also fascinating to watch. The group’s lead singer Peter Wolf, was moving every single moment of the performance Swinging his microphone pole, beating his tambourine, and then hopping and boogieing all over the stage, Peter absolutely psh-ched-out the entire audience J Oils the group's lead guitarist, clad in a blue metallic shirt with silver metallic boots, also got into the act by lumping and dancing all over the stage with Peter Then later on, the group’s singer-harrnomca player and bassist also joined with Wolf and Oils in their fancy footwork. Only one word could define their performance: fantastic.It seemed to me that they were an extremely difficult act to follow. Any group that would perform after them had to be really good And that they were.By this time the anxiety was so great that one could almost taste it in the air After what seemed to be an endless intermission, the highlight of the evening enteredthry appeared live in concert at theGeils rockSCLDKRIScreams filled the ail, as llie tour-inan British rock group entered tin* Memorial stage Ten Years After, a famed and talented band from England were what everyone was waiting for Alvin lee and his three other musical cohorts were absolutely stunning Alvin dressed in a purple ••Fillmore t-shirt ami orange patched pants also with his ever-popular dogs strummed out great musical turn's on his big red Gibson The T.Y.A. performance began with a cut from their Space in Time album, called One of These Pays. From there a few new tunes including Standing at the Station, were as expressed by lee tried out. on the crowd, because they have to be tried out on someone. Drummer Kick lee overwhelmed the audience with a five minute drum solo in a tune which they called The Syracuse Express,,. Bass player leo Lyons, drenched in a hard night's work, was truly excellent on his instrument Organist Chick Churchill, even though complaining about the so-called lousy organ” which they gave him. seemed to overcome his handicap and do exceptionally well. Alvin lie, 'picking his red music machine, minus the ever-popular peace sign which was usually in the upper left corner, did a tune where he actually mimicked his guitar playing to a tee One could think that there were two instruments playing insead of onelie and Company tried to end their performance with a great composition called Tin (Join* Home, which is a combination of such songs as Whole lit of Shakm’ , and Blue Suede Shoes. Now I sav tried to complete their concert because after the song, the group was brought back out again for not one. but two more encores.(redit should go to radio station W( )l ,F for sponsoring such concerts and getting popular bands to entertain the central New York area
