tai»l Society Held it the Home of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Beard.OCTOBER OUTING OCCASION.A J.ARC1E CKOWD.On Saturday last, there was an all day meeting ol the Floyd County Agricultural and Horticultural Society held at the elegant and hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Beard, near Kdwards* ville, a ad the people turned out in large numbers. Being the last out door meeting of the society for the year, and the weather being delightful, barring the drouth and dust, the attendance was larger than usual. A large delegation from Harrison county, honored the meeting by their presence.The meeting was presided over by Hector Garot, president o.* the society, and F. M. Yenowine acted as secretary in place of the regular officer.The society was opened by song and prayer.POTATOES.1 Dr. Harvsy Scribner Wolf • delivered ' a scientific as well as practical lecture on : how to grow potatoes in a dry season without rain. His method ia to do raoBt of the cultivating at the start by properly preparing the ground and feeding the plant with fertilizers. He exhibited fine specimens of late potatoes planted June 22. The yield was abundant, the size good and uniform. The seed cost about 40 cents per pound and the vege-i table is ready for market from four to five weeks earlier than any other variety.He planted early potatoes April 20th and the yield was good and satisfactory.The paper was discussed by Jonathan Heard and M. V. Hanger and many 'questions were asked and. answered.! The lecture was interesting to all and i much valuable information was imparted.THK lilKNEK.Tw o long tables, out on the lawn, were prepared and filled with the best edibles lbs country afforded. There was plenty such ns it was, and good what there was of it, and a feast of that sort never goes begging. There were some seventy pint*-* and none were vacant and yet there was provision aiitlicieiit to feed double the number present. The women did this work and it was well performed.During the f»asr, n glass of cider was passed. Hlld sipped. Hilda variety ol toaMs were responded to, making the feast intellectual as well as food wi'isfying.Crt.TlVATION OK OKAl’ES.After dinner, Mr. Saxtetter. the noted grape growerand wine maker of Leaven-worth, offered some interesting and acceptable points concerning grape culture,■ pruning, etc. He prodinres from 10 to Hi thousand gallons of wine from his vineyard, which is sold for family use and brings the best prices. He cultivates none hut the best and most marketable grapes. His experience dates back more than »»0 years.I*NKXI'KCTKD KIRK HR AND.Maj. Jacob S. l'frioiuier, of Breckinridge. Ifanison countv, read a well prepaid! and scholarly paper entitled, Is our civilization better than that of olden times?” He spoke of the architecture and habits of flu* fieople of olden times as being superior to those of the present in many respects and contended that as our boasted civilization progressed the people liecame more selfish and grasping and warlike; that while the people of this day and generation imagine they arc advanced in the arts and sciences, they do not compare with those of the ancients.The address was somewhat radical and »n advance of general public opinion and it was delivered with auch earnestness as to provoke hostile criticism.CAl'UTK' CRITICISM.Dr. H. S. Wolfe complimented the author by atating that the paper exhibited careful research and painstaking care in its preparation, but at tJie same time he thought he discovered an insidious attack upon the Christian religion.
