Westmar opens theater season Friday with Shaw's Arms and the ManWestmar college will open the theater season this weekend with a production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Arms and the Man.” In this play Shaw' has chosen for his subject war and love.At the opening of the play, Raina Petkoff, played by Jolene Philo, is anxiously awaiting the return of her fiance, Segius Saranoff, from the war between the Bulgarians and the Servians.Serguis, a member of the Bulgarian army, is played by Mike Buchman. Spirit Lake.Catherine, Raina’s mother, informs her Serguis just led an heroic calvary charge. In the role of Catherine is Lauri Henzlik, Rapid City.Louka, one of the Petkoff's servants, then enters the bedroom to inform them there might be shooting in the street because of the war and that the windows are to be closed. Louka is played by Helen Wohlwend, Beaver Dam, Wis.When Raina is once again alone in her room, a man comes busting through her window and into her room. He is Capt. Bluntschli, a runaway member of the Servian army.Bluntschli is played by Jack Sprague, Arnolds Park.Raina has pity on him and keeps him safe until she and her mother canBPW fallfinch inn fnmr-ryafdisguise him with Maj. Petkoff’s coatand sneak him out of town.The war ends, and Maj. Petkoff, played by Alan Cave of Cherokee, returns home, as does Serguis. But Bluntschli also comes back, to return the coat.iMore confusion arises when Petkoff and Serguis tell a story they heard of a man who, during a pursuit, jumped into a woman’s bedroom.Nicola, another servant, who is supposedly engaged to Louka, also suffers from the confusion by being told to do one thing, doing it, and then being called clumsy and stupid for doing it.Nicola is played by Tim Hoffman, Des Moines.When all the truth cornes out, a strange exchange of partners occprs.Because of the whole ordeal, real feelings have emerged from Serguis, Raina, Bluntschli, Louka and Nicola;and who are Mai. and Mme. Petkoff to stand in their way.Also seen in the show is Fred Schultz of Adel, in the role of the Russian officer.This Shaw comedy is under the direction of Jim Packard, a senior from the college.Production dates are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and a Saturday, matinee at 2 p.m., in Thoren auditorium.Admission prices are $1.50 for adults and $1 for students..by Ron Gunnink
