Another course needed . . . ■isatisfactory of the three choices. It would give Joplin and area(Last of Two Parts)By CLAIR GOODWIN News Herald Sports EditorUnless a solution is found, golf*; ers in the future here may be faced with drastically over-. crowded conditions on the Schif-ferdecker Municipal golf course.Harold Kirk, professional at the course, said such a problem looms ahead if the present r growth rate of the sport continues.i ^ Starting times already are be-, ing used by golfers to assure , play on Saturday and Sunday i mornings, and normally thosedays are oooked solid until well 5 into the afternoon.i The popularity of golf has - more than doubled during the o last decade, creating headaches k for players and groundskeepers that never before existed, y City officials are aware of the sr situation and are considering 11 construction of a new 9-hole or it 18-hole course to complement it Schifferdeeker and relieve some at of the pressure.A feasibility study on a second [y course is expected to be submit-;o ted to the Topiin Parks and Rec*r reatipn Board sometime this y month by Bob Dunning Associ-d ates of Mission, Kan, h Three possible sites, including100 acres of municipal park land*iin the northern section of the city, are being eyed.Arnold Newby, acting director of the Parks and Recreation Department, said the survey would determine if another course is needed and, if so, recommend its location.THREE ROUTESThe city has three routes available, Newby said, if the feasibility report is favorable for a second course.First would be a lighted nine-hole course, which was recommended by Richard Humphrey, former parks and recreation director. Preliminary cost estimates on this project indicate an outlay of approximaely $125,000, excluding any land purchase necessary. The second would be addition of a complete 18-hole layout similar to Schifferdeeker.A third route would be construction of an 18-hole course with nine holes lighted, either at the new layout or at Schiffer-decker.Cost estimates have not been obtained on the latter two possibilities, but it probably would run considerably more than$125,000.Construction of the 18-hole course to complement and take the strain off Schifferdeeker, however, would appear the mostgolfers two full courses from which to choose rather than oneand a half.♦Final action on construction of a new golf course, if recommended by the feasibility study and parks board, would be left to the city council. A tentative timetable, suggested by Humphrey, calls for completion of the project by 1973.That Schifferdeeker is taking a beating from the heavy play is attested to by Kirk, who said groundskeepers already are operating under a handicap of too many players and not enough tirhe.“We have golfers on the course seven days a week, from sunupto sundown, Kirk said. “Our maintenance men work on the course when the golf traffic permits.”In addition to construction of another course, the Parks and Recreation Board is taking a look at renovating Schifferdeck- i er so it could handle the heavy play more easily.A watering system for the fairways and rebuilding of greensare the prime considerations. Estimated cost of the two projects would be $128,000.Schifferdeeker golf course was started in 1922 as a nine-hole layout, but nine additional holes were completed in 1924.The course measures 5,804 yards and plays to a par of 35-36—71.iDERBYr\CARL SIMPSONNOW LOCATED AT 10M JOPLIN ST.WHITEWAY DERBYSERVICE STATION*V*THIS COUPON IS WORTHFREES H GREEN STAMPSWITH THE PURCHASE OP $2.00 OR MORE OF PERRY GASOLINE
