Defiance College Set For Indian ConferenceDefiance, designated by Gen. Anthony Wayne nearly two centuries ago as the “Grand Emporium of the Indians of the west,” once again will be a focal point for the American Indian Saturday as historians from several states gather on the Defiance College campus for a conference on “The Historic Indian in Ohio.”The conference sponsored by the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Commission is one of five being held in the state during the two-year bicentennial period and is the only one devoted to a better understanding of the role of the native American.Dr. Thomas Smith, director of the Ohio Historical Society, and Dr. Michael Devine, administrator of OARBAC, will be moderators of the two sessions, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in SchomburgAuditorium. The college history department, joint sponsors of the event, indicated that all interested citizens would be welcome to attend.Educators who will conduct the conference and their topics include: Dr. Reginald Horsman, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, “American Indian Policy of the United States During the Revolution and Its Aftermath in Ohio;” Dr. James O’Donnell, Marietta College, “The Revolution’s impact on the Ohio Indians;” Dr. Richard Knopf, Kent State University, “The Indian Wars in Ohio;” Dr. Karl Klopfenstein, Heidelberg College, president of the Ohio Academy of History, “The Removal of the Ohio Indians;” Dr. James Qifton, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, “The PostRemoval Aftermath;” Randall Buchman, Defiance College, “The Indians of Ohio, Who and Where.”“Uvening” up the proceedings will be two present-day American Indians, both residents of Xenia, who will discuss “The Indian Today in Ohio.” They are Tukemas, principal chief of the Shawnee Nation Tecumseh Confederacy, and Nasnaga, chief of the Warrior Society, Shawnee Nation.In conjunction with the conference a special collection of artifacts on “prehistoric man in Ohio” is being shown in the College Art Center.
