. B. Q. Band Traveled ManyMiles During 15 Years To BringFame To Railroad And To CityOrganized by Will S. Pruitt, music teacher, in the year 1882The original C B .and Q. band was organized about 1882 by Will S. Pruitt, a music teacher, who led the* band for a time. Later Jules Wright was made leader! In 1884 the band went to New Orleans to attend a national convention ol the K. of P. lodge. When it came time for the parade, a band from Albion. Michigan insisted that it was their place to lead tlje pa-I rade, because they had the best uniforms. This argument did not please the band members, as they felt the oar.d should be placed according to their ability, rather than uniform*. At that time Mort Haight of Burlington, who was a trainmaster with the C. B. and Q. railroad, announced as a peace offering that he would adopt the band and promote them as the official railroad band.After returning home, the officials of the railroad came to Fairfield on a morning passenger train and the train was held here for one-half hour while the band gave a concert. The band was then presented with silk banners with the words “Official Band C. B. and Q. Railroad. The men were also given bands for their caps with“C. B. and Q. lettered on them in gilt.This band was taken on a number of trips to play for conventions. Their weekly concerts in the park were very popular. Many couples rode horseback or drove rigs to town to hear the concert, and hundreds of people walked around and round the square. Concert night was date night during the gay nineties. This band wasactive for about 15 years.The personnel of the band was: W. E. Harris, Prank Clark, Clark Morris, Don c. Petty, Henry Spiel-man, James F. Wilson Jr., Will Grimes, Dr. E. J. George, Arch Hopkins. Fred Spielman, Hal Jordan. Fred Goehner, Jules Wright, Hort Petty, Charles Herring. Fred Kempsey, Bert Stubbs and V. E. Barker.
