A aeries of animated spirituals had sent thrill after thrill tingling through the veins of the massive audience, whose applause spent itself far out upon the shimmering waters of the Pacific.However, the electrifying sensation never to be forgotten by all who were there, came when James Lewis Elkins, the wizard of music and matchless conductor of WINGS OVER JORDAN led his singers through the immortal classic, an excerpt from Handel's Messiah, the Hallelujah Chorus. For an unaccompanied choral unit to handle such an intricate numberwith such each and beauty as did WINGS OVER JORDAN, wasenough to merit the honor whichfollowed their triumph. They moved eastward into Arizona and from there, they will proceed southeastward into New Mexico and down »nto the Rio Grand#Valley, turning northward for aChristmas appearance in Houston, Texas, and then on to a special affair in Wichita, Kansas, before heading into Florida, where they will spend the winter.Reverend Glynn T. fettle, originator and director of WINGS OVER JORDAN, has set into motion a movement to perpetuate his organization through scholar, ships to be granted brilliant youngNegro students who will delve intothe research of the spirituals,thereby projecting into posterity the ideals of WINGS OVER JORDAN while preserving the spirituals. Rev. Settle announced that during the year 1947, he has hopes of granting no Jess than 20 scholarships through the nation. Much interest has developed over Rev.Settle’s plan for preserving the spirituals which has won the cooperation of the greater portion of all the religious forces and educa-tional institutions as well as many prominent business and professional organizations.An effort is being made by the New York Management of WINGSOVER JORDAN to break into thesolid schedule of this American Institution of radio, concert, re-cording and screen fame in order that they might make an appear-ance in Cleveland, Ohio, immediately after their guest appearancewith the New York Philharmonic this coming spring.WINGS OVER JORDAN, now completing its ninth year as a rgeular Sunday morning feature of the Columbia Broadcasting System, became the first choral group in history to be sent by the United States government into the battle zones to lift the morale of the armed forces. Their tremendous popularity resultthg from their long* radio career, plus the added imputus of their overseas tour, renders it impossible for the unit to have a vacation. They are booked solidly through the whole of 1947, and with many 1948 bookings awaiting confirmation. Rev. Glvnn T. Settle, founder and director of WINGS OVER JORDAN is a native of the state of North Carolina. The Settle family resides at 2182 East 46th Street, Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Glynn T. Settle has just returned to Cleveland after adouble cross continent flight to visit with her husband and his aggregation of singers in California.\
