He was known throug-out the countryside for hia oratorical ability, and frequently delivered ad-dreaaes in the council; In polished die tion. The chief's oldest son, Robert Young Bear, will succeed to his father’s position as chief. He was the only salaried Indian chief in the United States. He received an annuity from the government of ?500 a year. He had been at the head of the Mesqiiakies since 1881.
