ELKS WILL HAVECOMMUNITY TREEArrangements Will Be Made Probably at the Next Meeting to Arrange For Community Xmas TreevtAlthough no official action has been taken we are informed that the locallodge of Elks intend to have a community Christmas tree ugain this year.This big event given a year ago for the first time in Grand Rapids for the benefit of the city, was only one of the big things the Elks had done and they intend to repeat the event again this year, only on a larger scale.The community or municipal Christmas tree last year was located on the square in front of the public library. This is an ideal place for anything of the kind bat the weather was verycold and In spite of the big bon-firewhich was kept burning on the market square, hundreds of the little ones suffered from the cold.There has bpen something said of holding tho affair this yoar in the Amusement hall as. there is ample room there to accommodate the hundreds of children. Last year Christmas Eve, the night of the big tree the thermometer registered 1G below zero and many of the little ones who wanted to enjoy the tree were kept. at home on account of the cold.Just what the Elks intend to do this year whether Lo huvc Lhe tree in the Amusement hall or at the square as last year is not known. In fact llicy have taken no action as yet in the matter.It is thought, however, that the tree will be held in the hall and everything will be on a grander scale than a year ago, and the children of this city given u much better time.Official action will be taken in a few days by the local lodge regarding the Christmas tree and something done regarding tho matter. Tt is a safe bet that the Elks of Grand Rapids will see to it tbac the little ones are entertained this year on Christmas Eve,whether it be on the square or in the Amusement Hall.PAID NO DOG LICENSETWO CITIZENS ARMSTED FOR REFUSING TO PAY DOG LICENSES -DOGS DISAPPEAREDTwo of the many residents of tins city failed to pay the annual tax on their dogs this year and they were arrested yesterday.Ike Meddaugh has owned a dog for a long time and when the police were collecting the tax on these animals this summer he failed to fork over his dollar. He was notified repeatedly but no attention was paid to the notices and yesterday he was arrested. In Justice Pomair.vilfe’s court he plead guilty and paid a fine of $2.00 and costs amounting to $7.10.Fred Zwicke has also owned a dog on which he failed to pay the tax. He admits having the animal up to a few weeks ago, but said that the dog has now disappeared, but whether it has been .kidnapped.or poisoned 'Mr. Zwicke does not know. At any rate he was arrested yesterday for not paying the dog tax. The prisoner seemed to be of the opinion that as the dog was not in his possession (it the present time that he was not supposed to let lose of his dollar tax and wns very indignant over his arrest.Before tho. case was called he telephoned to the poor commissioner and wanted to make arrangements for that official to rare for his family saying he supposed he would have to serve a jail sentence.He was granted ar. adjournment for one week and furnished a boil bondof $100.Justice.
