It did not cost taxpayers a pennyThe shelter's expansion was paid for by the Gladys F. Cos sage Charitable Foundation, a great exam pie of a public-private partnership. The animal shelter is the sole beneficiary of the trust, which provides its net annual income for capital improvements or additions to the shelter and for day-today operations. The Hutchinson Community Foundation serves a similar purpose by allow ing dona tors to des ig-nate money for their favorite charities. The shelter staff and those who visit often, are bound to appreciatethe Cos sage foundation gift. Before the remodel, the Lobby area was next to the kennel, and customer service and puppies in cages all converged in a small space. Meanwhile, the storage area was the size of a broom closet , and three animal con trol officer s worked in an area that was not all that accommodat ing. With the expansion also comes the potential for programs that will benefit the comm unit*/ a s a whole. The shelter added a meeting space, where an animal obedience class could be held or perhaps training or informational events related to animal safety and care. The Gossage foundation is just one example of how a private resident can benefit the community as a whole. Through the generosity of such char itable trust s, we can pay it forward for years to come w ith-out draw ing on the c it*/ s limited resources.
